Walter Mondale said this:
"The vice president has been very direct with other officers in pursuing what he thinks is the right course in national security and other areas," Mondale said. "What I think is wrong with that, is when others hear him talk like that they think the president is behind it. So it sort of chills the kind of vibrant discussion that we need for an open, balanced operation of the federal government."Carter would never have tolerated me doing that, and most presidents wouldn't tolerate, because it undermines the capacity of the president to hear it."
So, why would the AP title the news story about it 'Mondale Backs Vice President Cheney?'

You actually are gonna see more and more headlines like this. It panders to the rubes that are not intelligent enough to read through and entire article to get to the point where the news is, that the total opposite is true.
The media is not conservative or liberal but controlled by rich elites that have approved scripts to spin a public that that generally doesn't do critical thinking.
Most read the headline and just assume it is true. And you never see retractions but what good would it do ?

More and more, headlines are in deep disconnect from the stories that they top. And headlines are often a lot more "political" than the bodies warrant, as well.
Bad news -- one sees the headlines when choosing what to read.

The AP has had CIA "plants" for years, who attempt to manipulate public opinion or at least, skew the presentation of the news in such a way as to end up being propaganda. Mondale regards Dickless Cheney as being just a little higher on the evolutionary scale from pond scum.
Do a Google on "Operation Paperclip" for chilling details about the manipulation of the American media....
