The truth about Max Cleland.
Joe Conason does a great job dissecting conserva-blonde Ann Coulter's lies about Cleland. Rather than post Conason's excellent column (you can go and check it out at Salon - it's worth sitting through ana ad), I figured I'd honor Conason's wishes and post the really relevant part - Cleland's citation.
"Awarded: Silver Star; Date Action: 4 April 1968; Theater: Republic of Vietnam"Action: For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Cleland distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 4 April 1968, while serving as communications officer of the 2nd Battalion, 12th Calvary during an enemy attack near Khe Sanh, Republic of Vietnam.
"When the battalion command post came under a heavy enemy rocket and mortar attack, Capt. Cleland, disregarding his own safety, exposed himself to the rocket barrage as he left his covered position to administer first aid to his wounded comrades. He then assisted in moving the injured personnel to covered positions. Continuing to expose himself, Capt. Cleland organized his men into a work party to repair the battalion communications equipment which had been damaged by enemy fire. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
"Authority: By direction of the President, under the provisions of the Act of Congress, approved 9 July 1968."
Coulter is just vile. If she were a man, I'm sure she would have been beaten to a bloody pulp long ago.

But Ann (Dan) is a man. Check out the Adam's apple. Those don't grow on women. And if the prissies on the right faced bodily harm, they wouldn't act as they do. It's that darned civilization that they decry that keeps them safe.

These comments were so despicable and vile I actually gasped when I read them. I wish that Cleland would sue her for slander - I think that it would be a very effective way to start making these people stick to the truth.

Goodcubin, I think you are trying to be funny. Firstly Max Cleeland had nothing to do with Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinski playing hide the Cuban in her vagina. And secondly if there happened to be a exploding cigar in Monica's vagina, I bet Sen Cleeland would pull it out in a heartbeat with NO regard for his own life whatsoever, just as he did with that awful gernade!!

The manipulation of the Engish language and mangling of circumstance by Coulter is the meanest act of a mean person. Republicanistas tend to think that personal attacks - name calling and literary trickery are legitimate debate. This proves they know nothing and haven't facts to discuss. They only cuss.

I think the question is here is, a high profile demacrat blows his arms and legs off by his own mistakes and not in battle, is he still a "war hero"... or something else? David Cook?

Per Max's story as reported in the Boston Globe; Capt.Cleland Reached his right hand and arm TOWARDS the grenade andd it detonated. Pls note that is not picked up!! Had he picked up that muther there would be no story. US Grenade M79 has a total destrction range of 1.5 meters and an effective kill/severe injury range of 8-10 meters. Cpt Cleland was in the blast /kill-injury range and dammed luckie at that. Much has been made of his thinking it was his grenade--- ever here of fragging?
Maybe just Maybe the Captin wasn't as popular as he & we thought!
