"Oh, George... oh, George...
That Texas education must have fucked you up
When you were very small..."
And the Sisters Of Soul sang, and the crowd went wild...

"America.... America...
You've got freedom of Speech, and great beaches
Wildernesses and malls...
Don't let the might of the Christian Right,
Fuck it all up for you
And the rest of the World..."
And the Sisters Of Soul sang, and the crowd went wild... and then the saxman played...

Moving stuff.

A Little Personal Story:

When I was ten years younger than I am today, serving in the Navy, two friends and I set off on our motorcycles from Sardinia, Italy, through the south of France, to see the Isle of Man motorcycle races.

On our second day of riding, we got caught in a horribly hard and cold rainstorm. We needed to find some shelter fast, as it was getting dark.

We pulled off the hiway onto what turned out to be a farmer's road. After a mile or so, we spotted a small, stone farmhouse with a large "carport" that covered the homeowners car, tractor, and a few farm implements, a rabbit hutch. We decided to pull in, and ask the folks if we could pitch our tents beneath their awning. John spoke good French (I speak Italian and German, Jeff spoke some Viking language from Iceland). The elderly couple would have nothing of it...

They refused to let us camp under their awning...

We were American Sailors... Americans helped the French to win the War, and NO American would schlep with the tractor and plows.

They invited us in, turns out, they were in their early 70's, married 50 years. The wife offered us a large room with two beds and comfortable floor space; took our wet clothes, and other laundry, washed and dried them; cooked an INCREDIBLE French Provincial dinner of scallops and zucchini, a salad, cheeses, freshmade bread, wine... They spoke immaculate English, much to our relief, and the next day, sent us off with a large bundle delicacies for our continued travels.

She gave me the recipe for the scallops dish, which I still make regularly.

I'll post it if you'd like... it's wonderfully simple...

Anyway.... this song brought back those memories; and I honestly wonder if, ten years later, Americans would be afforded the same incredible courtesies.... Everywhere we went, we found the same reception... I honestly wonder if we'd be as well-received now?

What are your experiences? Do you feel they'd be the same, today?

I haven't been anywhere lately but I can tell you about my daughters' recurrent experiences-- surprisingly nice. But this is due to people realizing a US citizen who travels outside the country is not a Bushbot generally having wider horizons, interest in other cultures etc etc. They have met with friendliness and they enjoy meeting foreigners and hearing their anti-Bush opinions. People are able to separate a nation from its citizens. And that's good.
Great, great story

And post the recipe too--I loves me some scallops, and Provencal style is good by me anyday.

I've been overseas twice since the Idiot came to the White House, and I've never had a problem. I guess I was called out once--a year after 9/11, a ticket agent in London gave me my daypass and asked "are you a Democrat or Republican?" I told him Democrat, and he said, "so what do you think of Boosh?" I told him in no uncertain terms, and he said "then we're on the same side," and put his knuckles against the glass partition. Mine met his with a smile.

But I was also staying at a B&B on Gower St. Mrs. Rees ran a nice breakfast in the morning in a nicely decorated room with tablecloths and the whole bit. My last morning there, I entered only to see a very large fellow trudging across the room with his plate looking for more food. He'd obviously just rolled out of bed, because he had on a t-shirt, gym shorts with nothing underneath (not what you want to see first thing in the morning) and bare feet. This is not how you dress for breakfast, esp. in a place as nicely run as this. And when he came back to his table, it confirmed what I feared--his wife was sitting there, scarfing up the food. She had a chest like the front of an aircraft carrier, and stretched across it was a white sweater with a big American flag.

I agree that most folks can separate Americans from their government, but idiot slobs like these make it hard for the rest of us.

That story is wonderful, and it should teach us about puting our differences aside. I Just saw Roger Waters AKA: Pink Floyd in Phoenix, AZ.
Awesome show! No opening act and he played nearly 3 hours!
The only thing I dispised was that he just HAD to inject his
political OPINIONS into it. Since the majority of the crowd
was in support of his OPINIONS, that went over well.
Lets just take this a hypothetical step further.
Suppose Mr. Waters took the other side of the coin,
woulden't thousands have been pissed that he took
that time to do so? Especially considering the high cost of
concert tickets thesedays? Just a hypothetical question.
We are there to rock and be entertained, not be fed propoganda
from whatever side it comes from. Lastly, the Flying Pig that
had Bush's name on it's anus didn't include Hamas, Hesbollah,
or Al Quaida ANYWHERE on that flying pig. Whats up with that?
Not all Jews and rocking Americans appreciate anti-semetic/patriotic
symbology and/or remarks during shows that we pay alot for. Again,
just another opinion entitled by our 1st Ammendment same as opinions
injected by the legendary talent whom I worshipped in Phoenix on
October 3rd, 2006.
I Hate America !

Since the majority of the crowd
was in support of his OPINIONS, that went over well.

Since he speaks the truth .. its very obvious that majority of people will support him.

Especially considering the high cost of
concert tickets these days ?

Noone is “invieted” for a show.. we choose to go there. And when we spend so much of a money .. its again quiet obvious that we will join the show only if we are convinced with the band.

Lastly, the Flying Pig that
had Bush's name on it's anus didn't include Hamas, Hesbollah,
or Al Quaida ANYWHERE on that flying pig. Whats up with that?

Lol .. all these other names are nothing but creation of America itself. Don’t trust CNN,FOXnews and BBC for real “news”. All they got is “embedded paid journalists” way far away from truth. Al Quilda wasn’t ever existed without American support .. arms and money. So if you have to blame anyone .. blame yourself and your country. After all .. you are a free democratic country. Democracy.. isn’t it what you are fighting all there years for ?? against communist .. against Arabs .. ?? and what your own democracy gave you ?? You reelected bush twice !! Bravo !!!

I am an Indian and Hindu .. but still I HATE America for re-electing bush and giving him all the powers to attack and destroy other countries in the name of “terror”, “democracy” , “WMDs”. Any kid out side America would know that there was no chance that saddam could have WMDs.. Americans believed it .. coz their news channels told them so. Every Arab knows that this war is all about “oil” and they HATE you. Remember .. every drop of blood in Iraq and Afghanistan is “oil” for Americans” Without that your kids will not go to the schools. And I believe Roger Waters Understands this.. and all he wants to do is … let you guys “know” about it .. and that’s why he is so Political.

of course they love america, we are a proud and noble country. << Lmao !! I think you should remember .. how many ppl outside of America you killed .. in japan .. in Vietnam .. in Afghan .. in Iraq… now soon in iran and north koria. Just coz your country is giving you good roads and towers .. and gardens.. and hospitals . ?? may be it’s a “great” country for you .. but for those from whom .. you took all this .. THEY WILL ALWAYS HATE YOU. Ppl entertain Americans today . for MONEY .. let china become a super power .. Americans will be kicked left-right-up-down by even afghanis. Coz those who suffer don’t forget.

Leaving For The Bathroom
(Based on the crappy live version of “Leaving Beirut”) by bobby blume

Cartoon images show a rock star on stage, singing a meandering, plodding new song. Dialogue bubbles show the audience saying: “Oh no. Not this garbage.” “I’m going out for a smoke.” “Yeah, I’m going to the bathroom. Holy crap, look at the line out there!”

When I was 17 and I first heard “The Wall,” I had to go and get
Every Pink Floyd album at the mall
Now on your latest tour, you did “Dark Side of the Moon”
The glory of when you were the tops
And really had your writing chops
But first we had to sit through the new song “Leaving Beirut,”
I’d have to say it was a bigger bomb
Than the one we dropped on Hiroshima
You were an Englishman abroad ignoring all our boos
The horseshit had us running like we smelled the stink of old refuse

It was kind of sad to watch you bomb
I’ve been a fan so very long
I agreed when you sued your former band,
I’ve ignored lip-synching, and opera that was pretty bland
But this song was bad, bad and long
I hope you hear our plea
This crap should never be put on CDs
Oh Roj! Oh Roj!
Your ideology won’t let you see you’re still spitting on some of your fans

Is common sense too much for you?
Not once in your whole song
You dare criticize
The killers that are Hezbollah
Every time a suicide bomb does its job to kill innocents
You think it’s someone else’s fault and logic in your lyrics falls
Al Qaeda, Jihadists, they want to rule us all
They kill artists and poets, young boys and girls,
They killed Todd Beamer
They killed Daniel Pearl
They killed Theo van Gogh
They kill all races, all religions, they kill all
You know it’s the right of the Allied might to keep us safe
From extremists all over the world

Blame America First, you wealthy rock star you,
Your bullshit is still bullshit even when it has a catchy tune
You’ve lost the art of writing with subtle metaphor
Now you are Noam Chomsky, Oliver Stone, and Michael Moore
Back in ’61, an Arab family fed you food
You had to think back that far to remember
Arabs who were nice to you?
As I think back in time, from now until then
When did your talent end?
