Devastating report in the New York Times

John McCainMcCain's Vetting Problem goes mainstream.

It's all there. Everything from Palin's tawdry past in Alaska to the fact that Religious Right leaders mixed McCain's original choices (Ridge, Lieberman) and pretty much shoved their choice down Senator Maverick's throat. And contrary to what the McCain campaign says, they didn't even run a background check through the FBI.

The Washington Post quoted advisers to Mr. McCain on Sunday as saying Ms. Palin had been subjected to an F.B.I. background check, an F.B.I. official said Monday the bureau did not vet potential candidates and had not known of her selection until it was made public.

This could be the beginning of the end - not just of Sarah Palin's short ride as Vice Presidential wannabe, but of McCain's campaign. No way they spin this back. No fuckin' way.

Not to defend the McCain campaign, but why would the FBI be vetting potential VP nominees. Should a government agency even be in that business?
