Chicago Tribune Does What the Cubs Couldn't...

Barack ObamaThat is, break with a hundred years of history. Except it's longer for the Tribune--they've never endorsed a Democrat for president, ever. And that goes back to 1872. So while McNasty and Palin are out there shrieking that we don't know who Obama "really is," the Trib lays it down:
Many Americans say they're uneasy about Obama. He's pretty new to them.

We can provide some assurance. We have known Obama since he entered politics a dozen years ago. We have watched him, worked with him, argued with him as he rose from an effective state senator to an inspiring U.S. senator to the Democratic Party's nominee for president.

We have tremendous confidence in his intellectual rigor, his moral compass and his ability to make sound, thoughtful, careful decisions. He is ready.

To the battle stations, all wingnuts! The Trib is now filled with commie sympathizers! And secret Muslims too! Or is it that history has just recorded that John McCain's campaign is even too loathsome for a paper that's batted 1.000 for the Republicans for 136 years? (Correction: the Trib did endorse 2 non-Republican candidates, but neither was running as a Democrat at the time. A bit sloppy of me, as this is noted in the endorsement itself, so check there or in comments below for details.)

The Tribune endorsed Horace Greeley (before he bacame the Democratic candidate) in 1872 and Theodore Roosevelt (running as a third-party candidate) in 1912,

By the way, the Cubs won a good number of World Championships from 1872 through 1908.
