McCain: NASA is an "Essential" Program

John McCainJust watched McNasty on teevee doing his "freeze all but the most essential programs" schtick. He ticked off defense, veterans' care, Social Security and healthcare (hmm, isn't that the vast majority of the budget right there?), but he slipped one more right into the middle of those: NASA. Couldn't have anything to do with the fact he's giving the speech in Miami, could it? Anyone taking bets on whether NASA made the list in any other place he's campaigned? That, my friends, is pandering you can believe in.

Pandering? Nah. It probably means that he intends to change the NASA mission from space exploration to some sort of quasi-military "star wars" research, in addition to launching spy satellites.
As much as I love and appreciate what NASA does, I think it might make a lot more sense at this time to possibly merge NASA with NOAA and refocus that technology brain-trust toward exploring inner space and working on climate problems. At a minimum, hyper-$ projects like manned missions to Mars should be canned or be put on long-term hold.
