I truly can't believe I'm seeing this.
For years, the blog Little Green Footballs has been a thorn in the side of liberals. Head LGFer Charles Johnson drew the ire of many on our side with posts that got his blog labelled one of the most hateful on the conservative side.
But as I've pointed out before, Johnson is a bit more clear-eyed than your average Rightie blogger, and he's made some calls recently that appeal more to good old common sense than the lockstep conservative view. Believe it or not, LGF is where I found the Glenn Beck spoof video that I posted here the other day - Johnson is dead-on in his assessment of Beck as a fear-mongering toad (see here and here), and he also called bullshit on the 'Obama bows to Saudi King' faux outrage of the Right (even offering up video of Bush bowing to Abdullah as well as video of none other than Newt Gingrich saying that Bush did it, too).
As a result, Johnson is now being attacked by other wingnut bloggers, and he's giving as good as he's getting. Apparently, Pammie from Atlas Shrugs has accused him of being a Neo-Nazi sympathizer (say what you will about Johnson, but he's probably one of the staunchest defenders of Israel in the blogosphere), and Johnson finally calls Geller what we on the Left have been calling her for years - a borderline moron (I'm lovin' Johnson's quip about Geller's 'alleged mind') who shoots her mouth off with precious little grasp of what she's actually talking about.
My point? I guess this is where the rubber meets the road as far as conservative bloggers are concerned. Either they'll follow fearmongers like Glenn Beck down the 'Obama is turning America into a Socialist country' road without question (like Geller), or they'll stop and apply a little rational thought and recognize Beck's heated rhetoric as the hysterical bullshit that it is - like Charles Johnson has.
Do I expect Johnson to pull a John Cole and start taking the liberal side of the National Argument? Nah. But I applaud Johnson's ability to pull back from the Wingnut Abyss and apply some independent thought. Here's hoping that more in the conservative blogosphere follow his lead.
