Blog Status/General Rant

Site IssuesI've been meaning to post this for a while now, and after a conversation with Invictus over the weekend I figured now is as good a time as any.

This site has been in existence for over 10 years now, starting out as a music site with the odd posting about politics. Once Bush v. Gore happened and then the 9/11 attacks, the focus of the blog shifted nearly entirely to politics. When we started covering politics here at B3, there weren't a whole lot of us doing it. The outrage of the Bush II Era had just manifested itself, and there was plenty of outrage to go around and a ready audience to read what we posted.

Then Blogger happened, and a lot of people started blogging about politics. And once that happened, B3 held its own for a while - but as the landscape changed and people started to see political blogs as a source of advertising revenue in addition to a handy place to complain about Bush, the ''A' List' Blogosphere took shape and guys like us took a hit, but we kept going.

And now we're into a different era, where a Democrat is in the White House. But it seems like the same battles are being fought over and over again, now against chowder-headed media personalities and obstructionist Republicans (redundant, I know). As I wander from blog to blog reading about The Latest Fucked Up Thing Rush Limbaugh Said or What Crazy Glenn Beck Lied About On His Show or (Insert Republican Member Of Congress' Name Here) Has Set A New Standard for Irrational Hatred, I realize that I have very little to add to the discourse at this point.

Yes, I'm jaded. I'm pretty much over political blogging. Here's why.

There are literally thousands of political blogs out there. Most of the ones on the liberal side cover the same events, express the same viewpoints, draw the same conclusions. Many of them say what they have to say much better than I can, and between those blogs and the ones who can't say it better than I can the noise level is unbearable. The snark isn't really that funny any more - how many times can someone type 'IOKIYAR' or refer to John Boehner as 'Boner' before you're totally over it?

I can visit Daily Kos and I can guess the content and style of posts now just by looking at the poster's name. I won't impugn anyone's enthusiasm or commitment to the cause of their choice, but look - we've all been doing this for years now. Style points have been established, and some days the output of blogs both left and right is nothing but sheer repetition.

I really don't have the interest in running a full-time politics blog any more. The political climate in this country is way beyond toxic, and those who have the stomach for it can and probably will keep going. Good for them. Don't give up The Good Fight.

Me? I'm going to go back to a pre-9/11 Mindset here, if you will. The slogan for Blah3.com prior to Bush's presidency was 'Music, Media and Pop Culture.' That's coming back, because I find music much more interesting that pointing out tat Glenn Beck is an asshole for the 50,000th time.

My thanks go out to the B3 staff that has posted here for years - you guys added content to this site for free, and it was a pretty lively place for a while there. And if any of you want to still contribute political content, you are more than welcome. I'm going to go in a different direction at this point, but I don't expect any of you to just follow. Someone like Invictus has taken his expertise to a place where it is better appreciated and more widely read than it was here, and I can't fault him for it. He was a voice in the wilderness here regarding the economy, and what's worse is he was right - and there were very few eyeballs recognizing that fact. Someone with Invictus' level of expertise should be as widely read as possible, and he'll have my eternal thanks for contributing so much to this site.

But I gotta go where my heart leads, and unfortunately it's not leading me in the direction of the Endless Kabuki Dance that is modern politics in the United States. Sorry, not that interested.

I've located literally years of music reviews of some fine independent artists that disappeared from the site as we jumped from format to format, and those archives will be added to the site over the coming weeks. And if you're an idependent artist that has music for review, contact me and I'll listen to it and give my take on it.

And I'd like to thank everyone who thought enough of what we were doing here to come and read us every day. You're welcome to keep coming back, but there's really no point in trying to find a different way to say what thousands of other people are saying.

Time for something new. Stay tuned, and thanks for reading.

That's completely understandable. I see a lot of blogs shifting gears and moving to other topics. May I suggest moving to promoting new artists. One of my blogging buddies down in Ore. did something I wish he'd do again i.e. had a webcast of his group at a local club. That would be Snave of Various Extasies. I'm sure that would be a good thing for both you and your readers if you could swing it. You might even be able to squeeze a few bucks out of the deal for your trouble. Just a suggestion.

Thanks for this post, Stranger. I had pretty much figured this was what was happening quite a while ago without you having to say it. Let me just point out that I've been following you for a long time, if not from the very beginning. First ran across you on the Bartcop forum during the 2000 election fiasco, was an enthusiastic supporter of your pioneering flash work with Take Back the Media, and have generally felt your commentary, though rarer and rarer of late, has always reflected and reinforced my thinking at least as well as any other blog out there. I rarely look at Bartcop or the forum there any more, and Daily Kos doesn't get many clicks from me for the reasons you cite. There are maybe a half dozen I still check on a daily basis, and despite the sporadic activity here, this is still one of them.

It's been a shitty decade, punctuated by this phenomenal hope balloon that's nearly blown apart as badly as the real estate market. Your voice has been a rare one out of many that has helped me maintain what shred of sanity I've got left through all this. Not trying to talk you out of anything 'cause we all gotta do what we all gotta do and I totally agree with your perspective, just wanted to say thanks for all you've done and best of luck as you move ahead, hopefully with lots of focus on the positive things in your life.

Cheers,

I moved on to other things when it became apprent that despite the voters wishes that torture would keep being covered up. That Guantanamo wasn't closing. And that Obama just like Bush played lip service to the truth but in reality sought to change the topic rather than deal with the unpleasantness of accountability.

And then one by one I stopped reading most of the political blogs I had read before. Because they just like the Anti Idiotarian Imbeciles would spend all their time hurling insults and invective at the opposing team. Seems they were happy to have me on the team as long as I was only bashing the other team. As soon as I started questioning the plays of their team seems I wasn't important anymore. So the Dem sites have become the cheerleaders. Yay team. Speak no evil. Hear no evil. See no evil.

I still come here. One of less than a handful of sites that were political. I still come here because this site didn't gloss over economic reports to make Obama look rosier. I didn't often see a definate bias of team over truth. And I still don't.

But I understand you. I myself have put away the torch and pitchfork. If and when the rest of America realizes how screwed they are. And for what reasons they were intentionally screwed they want to climb those tall gates and bring down those responsible. Again. Kind of like the last time. And the time before that. And the time before that.

Because HEY EVERYBODY! Look over there! Tiger Woods did someone he shouldn't have! John Edwards is a porn star!

So yeah the fire burns bright and the anger builds and then it subsides until rekindled. Never actually going out. Just put up in the cubbord next to the torch and pitchfork awaiting a good reason to bring em back out again.

Blog politics when the fires burn. Don't when they don't.

Boy, you describe the same mood that's kept me from posting anything for a long time. And the Kurrent Kabuki is so bizarre and ever-changing, I feel totally unqualified to speak on it anyway. But I still hang out checking the site and doing some janitorial duties regarding some suspect "offers" and links that find their way into the comments and such. Can't offer much on the current music scene, but there's other pop culture stuff I'm up with. I'll keep an eye on where you'll be driving this bus, and if I can offer something that fits, well I will if you like. Looking forward to Your New Direction (/Spinal Tap).

And hey to ya, Sancti, I remember you well from the ol' BCF days.

That sucks but compeltely understandable. I have the SSDD feel about the left wing blogs i read but lately its all the same. I tried to read Sullivan to get a different vibe but invariably one of his posts pisses me off and i slither away.

Anyway thanks for the years of great politcial content. This was actually the very first blog i posted a comment to over 6 years ago. (holy shit!!!)

I am sure we will all have a change of heart when the next Republican asshole is elected President but until then Via con dios.

I will be back for the music
