05/01/2004 Entry: "Okay, what the fuck?"

This is just too goddam weird. I don't want to jump to any conclusions, but, shit.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter was assaulted by two men Friday night and taken to a hospital with minor injuries, according to a court spokeswoman.

The incident occurred while he was jogging at about 9 p.m. Friday, said Kathy Arberg, a court spokeswoman.

Law enforcement sources told CNN the incident occurred near the Potomac River waterfront in southwest Washington, not far from Souter's home.

It was not known if the motive was robbery or assault, but sources said it appeared to be a random attack.

Arberg said Supreme Court police escorted the justice to Washington Hospital Center. He was examined and released at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

Wasn't Justice Souter one of the justices that Pat Robertson wanted to get rid of with that "prayer offensive" of his? Hmmmmmm...

Reminds me of the "Pelican Brief". This administration is capable of anything & they're hiding something in Cheney's energy bill.

Didn't Bush I appoint this justice or am I totally having a brain fart?

He wasn't robbed; nobody's talking about the investigation. Our crack Washington press corps will probably let this one slip right through the cracks.

It was probably just a Sopranos-style warning, is all. Right, Fat Tony?

Bush did indeed appoint Souter. Won't go into details about how some Rep think Souter turned on their agenda.

i think it's remarkable that a supreme court justice would go jogging alone in d.c. after dark. even i know that's not a great idea. didn't something like this happen once before, or am i thinking of a movie or dan rather?

well, i'm not a conspiracy kind of guy, even though i matured through the days of the kennedy/king assassinations. but, it jumped to mind right away.

just look at the titles of 'their' books. liberals are evil, liberals are treasonous... and then there was the president's official nytimes puffer in that primary debate: would you consider yourself a liberal? yes or no? are you a liberal? c'mon, quick! are you a liberal? of course, souter's no liberal, but that doesn't stop the wingnuts. does any responsible individual think that that kind of undemocratic talk doesn't take it's toll? it feeds the crazies. and they be out there. what was his name--stern?--a denver liberal talk show host (and how few there ever were) got plugged on his doorstep about 20 years ago. after what limbaugh and his acolytes were 'casting about daschle the end of '02/early '03--he had security threats to deal with that pushed the needle gauge off the scale. you don't attack a jogger for lucre. not unless you're sure (s)he's wearing a rolex while they jog (are you kidding me?) or toting an i-pod. so whether or not there was something beyond ordinary thuggery, i wish incidents like this would open the eyes of the american public and initiate at least some thought about all the tangential issues involved here--about the insidious and wanton character assassinations. i'm skeptical you'll see much serious discussion in the media, though.
