The Backlash Cometh...

No link yet, but it seems the president of the university where Cheney spoke yesterday is protesting Cheney's speech, saying it amounted to a 'personal attack' and that he's considering having Kerry speak in order to refute Cheney's smears.

Westminster College's president said Monday he was so "surprised and disappointed" by Vice President Dick Cheney's attacks on John Kerry during a speech that he is inviting the Democrat to visit for a reply.

Fletcher Lamkin told The Associated Press that Cheney's staff approached him last week about using Westminster as the backdrop "for a major foreign policy address. Nothing was said about a stump speech."

In a campus-wide e-mail after the speech, Lamkin said: "I must admit that I was surprised and disappointed that Mr. Cheney chose to step off the high ground and resort to Kerry-bashing for a large portion of his speech."

And Kerry did another 'open mic' comment yesterday, pretty much calling out the media for doing the work of the RNC.

At the end of the interview, as he unclipped his microphone, Kerry, apparently not realizing the camera was still on, turned to someone and muttered, "God, they're doing the work of the Republican National Committee."

Interesting. Who was it that thought sending out a woman and a chickenhawk to attack a decorated war veteran was a good idea? Anyone? Bueller?

(Thanks to reader m for the Cheney link.)

Update: Kerry has accepted Westminster's invitation, and is scheduling a stop at the college.

the "muttering something while your mic is supposed to be off" maneuver is an interesting way to go about saying things that would get you into trouble otherwise. i must say that i would like the man more if he would just say those things while he is still "on the record"

Hey, I agree with your sentiments 100%... except I don't see any reason why having a woman attack a decorated war veteran is any worse than having a man attack one (I know you weren't trying to be sexist, it just reads that way).

I'm a new fan of your site. Been visiting for about 2 months. However, I must agree with hork on the "woman" comment.

Otherwise, keep up the great work.

Robin, I have to agree with you on that one. It is a little disturbing to think of government intelligence agencies like the NSA, DIA, FBI, CIA, OSP, and others tracking our every comment.

do you think that they weren't already?
